Historic Newspaper Archive

Historic Newspapers is the UK’s largest archive of original newspapers with around 7 million papers. This historic collection has been painstakingly put together over the years to create a wonderful archive that captures our history over the last three hundred years.

We assembled our newspaper archive by buying old newspapers from Libraries, Government Departments, and Universities, that in years gone by used to hold a newspaper from every day. The Times, in particular was the newspaper of record held. In the sixties and seventies many of these institutions micro-fiched their newspaper archives in order to free up the space taken up over decades and sold off their original archive of historic newspapers.

Birthday Newspapers

We bought many of these newspapers as they became available, to establish a gift business selling newspapers for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. Buying a newspaper from someone’s birth date or from a wedding date has become a very sought after gift.

These Birthday Newspapers are seen as a very special gift because they have a real personal resonance for the recipient. Historic newspapers are seen as special by the recipient because they report the news in the newspapers on the date of their birth or marriage, a nostalgic view on their past.

Personalised Newspaper Gifts

These original gift newspapers can be further personalised through the Certificate of Authenticity. We print the name of the recipient, the date of the newspaper, and a personal message on each certificate.

Archive of Old Newspapers

Our newspaper collection includes a wide range of titles. Some of historic newspaper titles, still printed today, were first published over two hundred years ago;

  • The Times was first published in 1785, starting life as the Daily Universal Register, before being renamed The Times in 1788.
  • The Observer is the oldest Sunday Newspaper, first published in 1791.
  • Slightly more recently, the News of the World was launched in 1843 as a broadsheet.

But some great old newspaper titles have long since folded. The Morning Post was merged with the Daily Telegraph in 1937. The Picture Post, a weekly pictorial news magazine, closed its doors in 1957. And The Daily Sketch was published until its merger with the Daily Mail in 1971. Some of these historic newspaper titles were great papers, and are a fascinating insight into the past. We have many of these newspaper titles, that are no longer in existence, in our archive – and the fact that they are no longer printed today, makes them a particularly nostalgic newspaper gift.

Our archive of old newspapers goes back over 300 years, our oldest newspaper being from 2nd November 1685 (The London Gazette). However, as we mostly sell Birthday and Anniversary Newspapers as gifts, the main interest in our archive is from the last hundred years.

Buy Old Newspapers Online

The simplest way to buy old newspapers for a birthday is online. With over 36,000 birth dates to choose from over the last hundred years, it would not be possible for a retailer to hold the necessary range of newspapers to cater for every birthday need. This is multiplied out when ones considers the range of newspaper titles available. However, buying old newspapers online could not be easier. By going online at www.historic-newspapers.co.uk, you can see the exactly what newspaper titles we have in stock in our newspaper archive of over 7 million old newspapers. Online, you will be able to choose the relevant date for a birthday or anniversary, and also see what old newspaper titles we have available

Once you have chosen your old newspaper online, you can then select your gift presentation. Historic Newspapers have an impressive range of ways to present your gift newspaper, to help you create a very special birthday or anniversary gift.

Historic Newspapers Research Facility

As the country’s leading newspaper archive we have a research facility, led by our newspaper historian. This is used by media companies researching programmes in development, educational establishments, and by the general public who are looking an old newspaper with an article or photo of themselves or someone they know.
