Newspaper Archives
This rich archive of newspapers is actively used in a wide variety of ways. We supply newspapers for researchers, media programme developers, historians, and educational establishments. However, by far the greatest demand for our archive newspapers is as a gift for birthdays, wedding anniversaries and other special occasions.
Archive Newspaper Gifts
Our archive newspapers make great gifts, as newspapers from a date of birth, a wedding day, or other special occasion are very popular. They are particularly valued by the recipient of a gift because they have a personal resonance. By buying an archive newspaper, you are making a connection with their past; they can see what was in the news on the day they were born, the gossip and fashion of the day, and the price of houses prevalent at the time. So, buying a birthday archive newspaper is a fabulous gift.
Because of the size of our newspaper archive, we can supply a newspaper from nearly any date. To see exactly what newspaper titles we stock, for any date of your choice, select your date below.
Building our collection of archive newspapers
Our archive newspaper collection has been developed over the years by acquiring newspaper runs from Universities, Government Departments and Public Libraries, many of which kept newspapers from every day. These papers have become more and more difficult to find, and indeed, many of the newspapers we have acquired in recent years we have found in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
We continue to seek new sources of archive newspapers, as they become rarer. Even though we have a large newspaper archive, the collection is finite – and when titles for a particular date are sold out, that is it. It is important therefore that we continue to replenish our archive newspapers when they are sold.
Our archive goes back over 300 years, the old oldest paper being the London Gazette from the 2nd November 1685. These old archive newspapers are part of a unique collection that form an important part of the country’s newspaper heritage.
The archive is situated in Baldoon, Wigtownshire, in south west Scotland. Here we have the perfect conditions to archiveold newspapers. Baldoon is situated near the sea, so the dampness in the air helps preserve the papers (if archive newspapers become too dry they become brittle and disintegrate).
Newspaper Archive Researcher
Historic Newspapers has a full time archivist, who can conduct research on our newspaper archive. We do a lot of work for media companies relating to programme development, as well as commissioned research by various institutions on specific themes.
We are also asked to do research for members of the public, who are looking for a past newspaper article – often an article in which either they or one of their relatives featured. So long as we are given a fairly clear brief as to where to look, we can usually find the article being sought by trawling through our archive newspapers to find the relevant paper.
