22nd April 1993Eighteen year-old Stephen Lawrence is stabbed to death in London in an alleged racist attack.

30th April 1993Tennis star Monica Seles is stabbed in the back during a change-over in the Hamburg quarter-finals. Günter Parche, an obsessed fan of Steffi Graf, is later convicted of the crime, but escapes a jail term on the grounds of insanity. Monica Seles is traumatised by the incident and does not step foot on a tennis court for over two years.
26th July 1993Miguel Indurain wins the 1993 Tour de France.
17th August 1993The public is allowed inside Buckingham Palace for the first time.
13th September 1993Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shake hands in Washington D.C. after signing a peace accord.
19th October 1993Benazir Bhutto becomes the first woman elected to lead a post-colonial Muslim state in Pakistan.
