By 2010, it was clear the world felt more volatile. A devastating earthquake struck Haiti, claiming 230,000 lives. Thousands also died in the earthquake scaled 7.1 in China. In the US, the drilling rig explosion spilt masses of oil on the Gulf of Mexico. In the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg revealed their policy programme, before Chancellor George Osborne put forward plans to cut £6.2bn of "wasteful spending".

It looked bleak worldwide. Though, there were moments to rejoice. The United Arab Emirates prospered, as the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai opened. The biggest single lottery win in the UK worth £113m was up for grabs. 33 miners in Chile were rescued after 2 months trapped underground, and China launched a second moon probe, ‘Chang’e 2’. US President Obama, passed the Healthcare Reform Bill, giving thousands of Americans affordable care, while the announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement dominated the newspapers.

Happy headlines were fleeting as the year ended. Plans to treble tuition fees resulted in violent protests at Westminster, with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall caught in the action. The emergence of the non-profit organisation WikiLeaks released a series of sensitive information, sparking an ongoing web war in the subsequent years.
