2008 was a year of incredible highs and devastating lows. Nature reminded the world of its devastating power, as Cyclone Nargis killed 130,000 people in Myanmar, a mere ten days before the Wenchuan earthquake killed 87,000 in China. Both catastrophes left millions more homeless. In October, the ‘Bloody Friday’ stock market crash saw many of the world’s biggest stock exchanges experience their biggest declines in history, going on to be described by experts as the biggest financial disaster since the Great Depression.

There was also cause for celebration in 2008, though. Barack Obama became the first black President of the United States; the Hadron Collider was powered up in Geneva; and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the most watched TV event of all-time, saw Usain Bolt obliterate the world record on his way to winning gold in the 100m final.
