18th July 2000Sussex police launch a murder investigation after the body of a 9-year-old girl found near Pulborough is confirmed to be that of Sarah Payne, who was reported missing on 1st July.
25th July 2000Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde aircraft, crashes into a hotel in Gonesse just after take-off in Paris. All 109 passengers are killed, in addition to four people from the hotel.
7th September 2000The United Kingdom fuel protests begin. Refineries are blockaded and therefore supply to the country's network of petrol stations is halted.
15th September 2000The 2000 Summer Olympics begin in Sydney, Australia.
29th September 2000The Long Kesh prison in Northern Ireland is closed.
21st October 2000Reginald “Reggie” Kray, leading figure in organised crime in London (b. 1933) dies.
3rd November 2000Widespread flooding occurs throughout England and Wales after days of heavy rain.
